The origins of our club nickname 'the cherries' have entered local folklore - but the commonly understood reason for the name is simply a romantic myth. The truth is far simpler.

On This Day
On this day in 1995 The Cherries win a huge relegation 6 pointer
Second from bottom of the third tier, Bournemouth had only 9 points at Christmas in a division where realignment meant that 5 teams were going to be relegated. The Cherries headed to Devon having played out a goalless draw with Argyle at Dean Court only a month earlier and having suffered a disappointing home defeat against Brighton the week before. It was another tight game at Home Park, but Michael McElhatton managed to nod in a Jason Brissett corner that had bobbled off of Adrian Pennock’s thigh. A scrappy goal but a massive win. The Cherries were now only 3 points from safety and people started to believe that the Great Escape was truly on.
